Understanding drop arm awnings in the Australian context

The tradition of having some kind of shade In the exterior areas of storefronts is quite an old one in Australia. Many stores would have some kind of shade in the front space even at the beginning of the 20th century. The tradition has been carried on along by the European settlers who settled in Australia. It is not just storefronts that need shade, even in the homes there are outdoor areas that need to have shade and shelter. When it's wintertime in Australia, especially in Southern Australia, sitting in the Sun can feel soothing.

In summer time sitting in the Sun or prolonged exposure to the sun rays can, not only be distressing and uncomfortable but also outright dangerous. Long exposure to the sun in Australian summers can cause skin cancer in humans. There has to be a way to protect people from the dangerous effects of direct Sun. Fortunately for Australians, there are drop arm awnings that provide shade and shelter from the Sun and the rain respectively. It is a good idea to get the shade and the Sun when one likes. Drop arm awnings create shade when people have the need and neatly fold when there is no need.
